The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia or FINAS, was established by an Act of Parliament No 244 of 1981 and started operation in October 1981. Initial projects encompassed the collection of information and preparation of reports pertaining to the production, distribution and exhibition of films, identification of annual activities and development projects for The Fourth Malaysia Plan (1981-1985), and also to establish ties with relevant local and international film organizations. FINAS was established in response to the film community's call for Goverment assistance to improve and speed up the development of the local film industry. Since it's inception FINAS has: -Provided training programs relating to the film industry. -It has also provided assistance by making available services, facilities and filming equipment to film producers. -Participated in international film festivals, exhibitions and seminars or in any activity of a similar nature both inside and outside Malaysia. -It its efforts to upgrade quantity and quality of films produced locally, FINAS has implemented several schemes such as the Feature Film Funding Scheme, Film Trust Fund and Equipment Rental Service.
