Sinopsis

"Beyond the Skin" is a deeply true story about scars. It is narrated by Giuseppe Losasso, a plastic surgeon from Udine, who travels to Pakistan to operate on acid attack victims. His testimony recounts his mission to restore the smiles of women—girls, and even children—who have lost everything due to brutal violence: their faces, roles, and dignity. These women bear the mark of a refined, diabolical punishment, simply because they dared to say no to imposed marriages. Instead of being killed, they are disfigured by acid, which leaves a permanent, unmistakable sign on their bodies, as a warning to others.

The documentary, primarily set in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, intertwines the locations of the doctor's mission with a dynamic montage of testimonies, archival material, and evocative reconstructions of the acid attack survivors' stories. Alongside the victims, the doctor, supported by volunteers, undertakes a challenging path—marked by sacrifices and obstacles but also unexpected encounters with compassionate people and important figures who embrace the cause with great humanity.

It’s a story of courage and skill overcoming hardship, but also a story about hope and the return of smiles after immense suffering
