Synopsis

When the stingy patriarch of the Guerra family, Angelo, has a motorcycle accident, his son Brando, a spoiled bohemian man, is forced to return to replace him at the family business, the Hotel Riva. Waiting for him are Alba, his phobic mother, and Clara, his older sister, who devoted her life to the hotel without ever receiving credit for her efforts. Everything returns to an old routine until the sons find out that Angelo wants to gamble it all away before he dies so as to leave them nothing to inherit. He considers them worthless. Brando and Clara, decide to get rid of their parents by gifting them with a boat destined to go up in flames. Their mother, however, is saved, getting upon Angelo's demise the bulk of the inheritance and consequently control of the hotel. Her mental health, having lost her husband, deteriorates further. The sons, to get rid of her, stage a fake robbery by erasing evidence so as to convince everyone, including Alba, of her madness. Alba is interned while Brando and Clara gain control of the family fortune. They celebrate by drinking the notorious special wine bottle that belonged to their father. Drunk, they discover that they disagree about the fate of the hotel. Brando wants to sell while Clara wants to renovate the business. The bottle, however, turns out to be lethal. It belonged to a batch of methanol bottles that sent dozens of people to the other world in 1987. Both die. The last Guerra standing, Alba, proves she is not crazy and returns to the hotel. An announced storm surge, however, is on its way. The Riva Hotel collapses and Alba with it. Nothing seems to be left of the Guerras but on the horizon we see a dinghy of African migrants coming toward us. Among them Angelo, rescued by the very hated migrants, who returns to shore unaware of what awaits him. Death and rubble, the inevitable outcome for a life spent in total selfishness.
