For over half a century, the ‘Nudie Suit’ has been equated with the pinnacle of country music and rock ‘n roll legend, expressing the style and showmanship of artists from Roy Rogers and Dale Evans to Willie Nelson and Elvis Presley as well as numerous other legends of music royalty along the way.
The Suit tells the beguiling story of a bespoke masterpiece from the fashion dynasty of Nudie Rodeo Tailors, beginning in 1967 and the Southern California desert with Gram Parsons’ band The Flying Burrito Brothers, to the Top of the Pops with Sir Elton John … And finally with its prodigal return to America and Nashville’s Country Music Hall of Fame.
ThIs is no conventional fashion story. The Suit has been stolen, sold, auctioned, and ultimately liberated, and today stands as an enduring symbol of pop fabulism idolized and emulated by generations of artists, fans, and collectors for its iconic style and character.
The Suit reveals the birth of cosmic Americana music and explores the intrigue behind the loss of visionary multi instrumentalist Chris Ethridge’s Nudie and it’s mysterious reappearance five decades later, 'suddenly' made famous by Elton John. And finally, It celebrates the artistry of master tailors Nudie Cohn and Manuel Cuevas, the fashion iconoclasts who succeeded in capturing a sound of the times in fabric and rhinestones.
Depending on which side of the Atlantic a music junkie might live, they might recall “The Burrito Suit” or “The Rocket Man Suit,” but not both, and that paradox is the heart of our story. The odyssey of its reemergence is as profound and fascinating as the men who wore— and made—The Suit.
Featuring music and performances by Elton John, The Flying Burrito Brothers, Gram Parsons, Chris Hillman (The Byrds), Patrick Sansone (Wilco), and more.
